World Cup Power Rankings

  1. France (+1) They’ve grown as the tournament progressed but in truth were always in control against a weakened Uruguay. M’bappe will surely have a huge say in the semi-final and with Matuidi back France will go into the last week of the World Cup as favourites.
  2. Belgium (+3) The performance of the round to stun Brazil. Roberto Martinez deserves huge credit for changing tactics and wrong footing the Brazilians, I said they needed to move De Bruyne further forward and when they did he was devastating. The question now is how does Martinez line his side up to face France?
  3. England (+1) It’s Coming Home! England are there for the first time since 1990 and produced a high quality display to brush aside Sweden. This tournament has far exceeded most fans expectations and alongside Kane the likes of Pickford, Maguire, Lingard & Stones now form the bedrock from which England will build for the next half decade. But the future’s for another day, as of now It’s Coming Home and Becks doesn’t have to escort Zlatan around Ikea.
  4. Croatia (+2) It wasn’t pretty but Croatia made it to the last 4.  Croatia soared in the group phase but have fought 2 attritional battles in the knockout and how much they have left in the tank is questionable. Modric & Rakitic may find more space to work with against England’s more adventurous midfield but their defence looks vulnerable with Harry Kane homing into view.
  5. Brazil (-4)  For a fourth World Cup in row Brazil’s run lasted until they met a genuine European powerhouse and then a swift elimination. There’s little wrong with Tite’s approach or the talent at his disposal and Brazil have at least moved on from the abject humiliation of 2014. But they’re not the finished article and will need to look build a new back 4 oh and someone please have a word with Neymar.
  6. Uruguay (-3) And it’s goodnight from them! This was the last chance for the golden generation of Cavani, Suarez & Godin none of whom will be there in 2022 but they gave probably their best and certainly cleanest world cup performance here in Russia. The bitter irony of Cavani’s injury ruling him out of their quarter-final is that all 3 of this generations World Cup’s ended with only half their dynamic front duo being available in their final game (following Suarez’s suspensions in 2010 & 2014). Sporting Crime it seems does not pay!
  7. Russia (-) This was far far better than anyone dare dream a month ago, but Russia’s lack of quality meant a run any further looked a stretch. They gave everything and left the Sochi pitch with their heads held high after another energy sapping knockout game, but there would be no penalty fairytale this time. Progress has been made but the challenge will be to keep it going when international competition returns away beyond their own borders.
  8. Sweden (-) Their famed resilience wasn’t enough to bag a semi-final spot. Sweden played like an England side of the past with their rigid 4-4-2 and counter attacking game but England had the quality to play around them and once they went 2 down it was all over. Sweden kept going as has become their trademark but with young talent to build on the future looks bright, if they could just find a reliable goal poacher- the last one now has to sit at Wembley in an Englans shirt and eat fish & chips!
  9. Japan
  10. Portugal
  11. Mexico
  12. Spain
  13. Denmark
  14. Switzerland
  15. Argentina
  16. Colombia
  17. Nigeria
  18. South Korea
  19. Senegal
  20. Peru
  21. Morocco
  22. Serbia
  23. Germany
  24. Iran
  25. Poland
  26. Iceland
  27. Australia
  28. Tunisia
  29. Costa Rica
  30. Saudi Arabia
  31. Egypt
  32. Panama
