On Thursday Gareth Southgate names the squad he hopes confirm England World Cup qualification. With a lengthy injury list (Rose, Lallana, Welbeck, Clynne, Antonio, Heaton, Barkley, Drinkwater, Chalobah & Shaw) who might be in for a call up:
This wouldn’t exactly be a shock given Tom Heaton is injured and Southgate has a tendency to pick 4 goalkeepers. But Forster has found a decent run of form and with the number one spot up for grabs Forster should at least be in the training sessions when Southgate makes his choice.
Captained the Under 21s last time out but with Mason Holgate, Trent Alexander-Arnold & Ben Chilwell in the Under 21s squad Southgate may feel he can promote Gomez without weakening the junior side.
Meanwhile Luke Shaw is short on match fitness and Danny Rose is still injured, so Southgate may be tempted to pick versatile youngster Gomez at leftback rather than the untrusted Aaron Cresswell.
The 23 year old is bang in form for Newcastle although there is strong competition for places in central defence.
But with Chris Smalling yet to make a premier league start this term surely Lascelles can jump him in the queue.
Carroll has been quietly effective in the Swansea midfield this season. England have better long term options; Harry Winks, Tom Davies & Lewis Cook but none are yet regulars for their clubs and are developing nicely with the Under 21s . With doubts over both Chalobah & Livermore it’s now or never for Carroll.
This would be controversial- last week Abraham was linked with changing international allegiance to Nigeria but reaffirmed his commitment to England. A cap in a qualifier at senior level would guarantee Abraham stays with England.
Of course that would be a highly cynical move by all concerned and it will be mentioned were Abraham called up.
But 3 goals in 7 games is a better record than Defoe or Sturridge and with Welbeck injured Abraham merits consideration, whilst his aerial presence offers England a different option: He might just get in.
